Russian Orthodox Churches
More then 1000 years the Christian faith is in Russia and the architecutre of the Russian Orthodox Churches reflects the Russian national character and soul of Russian people. Russian architecture has been predominantly religious. Churches were for centuries the only buildings to be constructed of stone, and today they are almost the only buildings that remain from its ancient past.

The church of St. Sergius of Radonezh was built in 1690-1702 inside Vysoko-Petrovskiy Monastery by order of Peter I (Peter the Great) to replace the remaining wooden buildings.

The Vysoko-Petrovskiy Monastery was founded in the 14th Century go Metropolitan Peter, Archibishop of Kiev and All Russia. The original monastery was dedicated to the Apostles Peter and Paul, but later, when Metropolitan Peter had been added to the company of the saints in 1327 (or 1329) its name was changed to the Petrovski Monastery. The monastery has been rebuilt many times since its inception. Until the beginning of the 16th Century all of the buildings were made of wood.

The Vysoko-Petrovskiy Monastery is an excellent example of Baroque architecture in Moscow located not far from Bolshoi Theater on Petrovka street. This monastery was constructed towards the end of the 17th century by the Naryshkin family, relatives of Peter the Great. The style of architecture we call by their name - "Naryshkin Baroque".
