Russian Orthodox Churches
More then 1000 years the Christian faith is in Russia and the architecutre of the Russian Orthodox Churches reflects the Russian national character and soul of Russian people. Russian architecture has been predominantly religious. Churches were for centuries the only buildings to be constructed of stone, and today they are almost the only buildings that remain from its ancient past.

This is the Church of the Sign of the Virgin in the settlement of Dubrovitsy near Moscow, which was built in 1690-1704 on money of Prince Boris Golitsyn* by architects from Switzerland. The legend says that the church was built as a sign of reconciliation between Golitsyn and Peter the Great, and that the tzar even helped to build it.

The church exemplifies a style that employs a lavish decor rarely seen, the style known as Moscow baroque, or Naryshkin baroque, after the Naryshkins, the noble family that built most of the churches of this style. Despite their small interior space there is a majesty about these tall and perfectly proportioned churches.

Info:
*Prince Boris Alekseevich Golitsyn was born On July, 20th, 1654 (on July, 30th on new style). This not ordinary person was "Uncle" (the tutor) to the Peter the Great, and in many respects to him we are obliged by that the most important Reformer in our history became such "GREAT" what he became...
