Red Square
The Red Square is a symbol of Russia. In its architectural ensemble it is considered to be one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. Through the ages it changed its name many times and only in the 17th century it received its present name "Krasnaya" - Red, which in old Russian meant - "Beautiful".

This picture I took long time ago, one summer day in 2005. I remember that I took it by pure accident talking with my clients about the double eagle on these towers, which is the symbol of Old Russia (before revolution 1917). & New (from 90s, after starting democracy) Russia. The towers of the Resurrection Gates on the Red Square are very decorative and colorful. I like this picture with sharp architectural details of these towers very much and hope you will like it too.

The Resurrection Gates nearby the Red square was the part of the former KitaiGorod wall. It was destructed in 1930s, in Stalin's times, to extend the Red Square for meetings and military parades. The Gates were reconstructed by their original shape with its beautiful towers and symbols of Old Russia in 1993-1995.

The double headed eagle is a common symbol in heraldry. It was the coat of arms of the Byzantine Empire where the heads represented the dual sovereignty of the Emperor (secular and religious) and/or dominance of the Roman Emperors over both East and West. After fall of Constantinople, Grand Moscow Prince (Ioan III) adopted this symbol as the state emblem in 1472 to position themselves as successors to the Byzantine state and to likewise symbolize their dominion over the west (Europe) and the east (Asia).
